How do I design my prints, patterns in Illustrator? How to prepare the rapport not to have problems with printing?

Recently I'm being asked for this kind of work, specially for fashion. In addition to that the patterns are also used for brands or packaging and they are amazing.

I know that Illustrator, from the CS6 version, brings a patterns generator where "it's all easier". But it doesn't work in certain cases and that's I decided to do it always manually, so that way I handle the process, not the software.
