How to do Italian/Tubular bind off for 1x1 ribbing

This is my favourite way to bind off any project. It’s super stretchy, looks great, and really fun to do! The difference between Italian and Tubular bind off is that Tubular bind off includes a few extra rows of double knitting before the actual bind off. The double knitted rows creates a tube which is great for when you want to add an elastic for extra hold. The bind off edge also looks thicker and rounder than an Italian bind off. For Italian bind off, you can go straight into the bind off without extra double knitting rows. Italian bind off is actually stretchier than Tubular bind off, which makes it great for garments like socks!

For reference, in this video I am doing an Italian Bind Off!

Steps for 1x1 Italian/Tubular bind off
1. Weave needle through first stitch knit wise and slip it off (over knit stitch)
2. Skip the first stitch, weave needle through the second stitch purl wise (over knit stitch)
3. Weave through first stitch purl wise and slip off (over purl stitch)
4. Thread needle between the first 2 stitches from the back (between first knit and second purl stitch)
5. Weave through second stitch knit wise (over purl stitch)

Happy knitting!!
