How to Draw Portraits Quickly with Mass Drawing

Follow
Proko

In this lesson, Stephen Bauman shows a technique called mass drawing, a quick way to create a portrait by focusing on large value shapes instead of lines. He starts with rough shadow shapes and uses measurements and triangulation for accuracy. Think of your pencil like a paintbrush, focusing on where values meet. This method needs good contrast in your source image and works best with soft graphite pencils. With practice, mass drawing can speed up your blockin process and improve your portrait skills.
