A professor from Azusa Pacific, Kathryn Kumagai Shimamura, PT, DPT, NCS, OCS, CSCS, FAAOMPT, shows us how to properly engage the core and appropriately give cueing to activate the correct muscles
The "core" is made up of the anterior, posterior, lateral, superior, and interior walls.
The anterior wall: transverse abdominis, internal/external oblique, and rectus abdominis
The posterior wall: multifidus and erector spinae muscles
The lateral walls: internal/external oblique
The superior wall: diaphragm
The inferior wall: pelvic floor muscles
Observation is a key skill to use when addressing the core. You can observe breathing patterns and movement in the core during various activities, such as walking. These observations helps cue the physical therapist which impairments to address and treat.
