Front splits are the ultimate leg flexibility compound exercise. The entire posterior and anterior chain of your legs gets stretched in opposite directions. Front splits are highly technical requiring advanced levels of coordination and body awareness yet they are extremely scalable offering ideal progressions of athletes of all levels.

Whilst the journey can seem long at first with correct programming and the right approach progress is often quite fast due to the front splits complexity and wide variety of demands on the body.

In this video we are going to take a complete and science based approach to the front split. We will analyze the muscles and joints involved, work on understanding how to know which muscle is holding you back from achieving this compound stretch, break each part down individually and see how to stretch them. We will look at why your hips are rotating out and how you can fix it.

The exercises found in this article are collected and organized in a workout that you can customize and download below. Alternatively there is also a follow along workout for the mentioned exercises. Naturally this workout is not individually customizable.
