Some U.S. citizens are planning to get married in another country. They are often asked to provide the Single Status Affidavit, to affirm that they are not already legally married and are free to marry. The Single Status Affidavit must be Apostilled if the destination country is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention (https://www.hcch.net/en/instruments/c....

The following instruction is for U.S. citizens outside of the U.S. now.

Some countries may refer to the Single Status Affidavit as follows.
No Record of Marriage
Certificate of Freedom to Marry
Certificate of No Impediment for Marriage
Certificate of No Record – Marriage
Affidavit of Single Status
Affidavit of Marriageability
Affidavit of Civil Status
Certificate of No Public Record
Eligibility to Marry

They are the same document and for the same purpose. Let's look into the apostille process.

First, Get your Single Status Affidavit at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

You first need to fill out the Single Status Affidavit. Do not sign the affidavit. You will be asked to sign under oath at the Consulate, by the Notarizing Officer.

Then make a notary appointment. Have it notarized by the U.S. Embassy or its Consulates which have power in your marriage country or province.

You may find U.S. Embassies or Consulates in different countries at this link: https://www.usembassy.gov/.

Second, Apostille your notarized Single Status Affidavit at the U.S. Department of State in Washington D.C.

U.S. Embassies do NOT have the authority to affix an Apostille to documents issued in the United States or in other countries. Any Single Status Affidavits which were signed and notarized at a U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate outside of the US, can only receive an apostille through the U.S. Department of State in Washington D.C.
