How to Hack a Trippy Terraced Elevation Effect

Follow
John Nelson Maps

There are kajillions of ways to visualize terrain on a map. In the 1800s cartographers loved "caterpillar hills" or hachures around elevation contour lines to make a fuzzy mountain effect. Sort of a neat look, google it.

Here's a way, in ArcGIS Pro, to make a super fast cheater hack to apply a hachurelike effect to contour lines. And then for giggles, I give the contour lines a terraced gradient shadow sort of thing. You'll see what I mean.

You can download a prebaked style file for Pro, if you want a head start: https://esristyles.maps.arcgis.com/h...

Definitely check out some of Warren Davison's more respectable hachure work here: https://warrenrdavison.wixsite.com/ma...

And if you're feeling just insane, dig into Ken Field's terrain tools: https://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html...
