How To Hide A Homelab IN Your Homelab with a Proxmox SDN

Hey everyone, thanks for joining me today! In this video, I dive into the practical uses of a Proxmox softwaredefined network (SDN), building on a previous video where we set one up. Initially, I didn't see many practical uses for an SDN, but I've since come up with some ideas that I think are pretty cool.

Before we dive in, make sure you're familiar with Proxmox containers and VMs, and it would help to watch my earlier SDN setup video. We'll also be using Cloudflare for part of this.

We're using my Proxmox testing environment to explore how to hide and access a homelab within an SDN. We'll start with a Proxmox container running the Glance dashboard and then move it to the SDN. Once on the SDN, it won't be accessible from the rest of your network directly, which can be a good thing for privacy and security, but we'll use Cloudflare tunnels to regain remote access.

Here's the stepbystep:

Move Container to SDN: We assign the Glance dashboard container to the SDN, remove it from the main network, and ensure it gets an IP from the SDN. We also troubleshoot some connectivity issues, like Docker commands not responding.
Set Up Cloudflare Tunnel: After configuring the container on the SDN, we use Cloudflare tunnels to make it accessible via a domain name. This is handy if you don’t control your network or want to save IP addresses on your main network.
Access via Another VM: We also demonstrate accessing the SDN container from an Ubuntu VM on the same SDN, effectively isolating and hiding the homelab.
A tip: Firefox on Ubuntu might redirect to HTTPS by default, causing issues with containers without SSL. Adjust some browser settings to prevent this.

Lastly, even though containers on the SDN can't be directly accessed from the main network, they can still reach out to it. This means you can run a secluded, secure homelab without losing connectivity to other necessary network resources.

I hope this gives you some new ideas for your Proxmox setup. Feel free to share your thoughts and additional ideas in the comments. Thanks for watching, and see you in the next video!
