Axes that come out of the factory or attic often have thick cheeks that prevent the edge from penetrating the wood sufficiently. You can have a sharp axe, but one that doesn't bite into the wood.

This is one of the first things you can learn when you start logging with an axe: it will totally change the satisfaction you get from the effort.
