How to Make a Great Modular Techno Groovebox Tutorial and Demo

I love building small modular cases almost as much as I love techno. When I put this small case together my goal was to make a setup that was portable and fun to play, but still let me make melodic techno sounds. Is this my best small techno case yet? You be the judge!

The heart of this setup uses the ALM Squid Salmple to play drums and classic techno stabs. The drum samples are triggered using the DNIpro Dot sequencers. These little guys pack a lot of functionality into a small footprint. I’m using the Mimetic Digitalis to send pitch information into channels 7 and 8 on the Squid Salmple. The Salmple has quantisers on each channel so I don’t need to worry about getting the notes just right on the Mimetic.

I also use channels 2 and 3 on the Mimetic as clocked modulation into the two filters. Speaking of filters in this little setup I’m using the Steve’s MS22 from ThreeTomModular and the Viol Ruina from Noise Engineering. Just the right amount of filtering madness in 4hp each. Finally FX Aid provides delay on one of the sounds.

There you have it; a multi voice techno kit with sequencers, 4 modulation lanes, manual control, two filters and effects all in just 62hp!
