HOW TO PAINT A SPRING TIME CARDINAL IN DOGWOODS using oils/step by step with Suzanne Barrett Justis

Aaaah, Spring time has arrived and in this time lapsed painting tutorial, I will show you how to paint a male cardinal in dogwoods. I will show you how I start out with a thin wash of paint and paint thinner, and wipe out the shape of the bird and flowers. I will proceed with blocking in the negative space around the wiped out shape and then block in the bird with cool alizarin crimson and hot cadmium red medium. I will discuss a little about color mixing , using warm and cool colors, and complimentary colors to create that "pop" in a painting.

The paints I used were primarily Michael Harding, Richeson Oils in the Shiva series and Windsor Newton Oil Paints, but I also used the Brown Pink by Gamblin....the colors were, Brown Pink, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red Med, Vermillion, Ivory Black, Sap Green, Ultramarine Blue, Kings Blue, Burnt Umber, Shiva Yellow Citron. Of course there was a lot of mixing, but this was the starting line up for this piece.

generally use Rosemary and Company paint brushes and will include the link here for your consideration

one of the brush I used for the most was a Synthetic Shiraz pointed round or rigger, I will also leave you the link to the brush here. It is a very versatile brush, and you can see that if was able to do everything I asked of it in this painting tutorial

I also used several of the Eclipse long Filberts of various sizes, you can find them here

and Ivory long filberts, my " work horse brush" I love them.
