Transform old door hardware (knobs, handles, hinges) by simply spray painting them with a quality spray paint. I painted our door plates to match the nickel finish of other fixtures in our home using using RustOleum Universal Advanced Formula Metallic Paint & Primer in One. Is the finish a perfect match? No, but it's so close that it's not noticeable unless you put everything side by side. The new color sure beats the finish of the 1980's gold hardware. It's a simple DIY project and less expensive than buying new hardware.
To refinish a surface, use a fine steel wool to roughen glossy surfaces and remove rust, wash, and spray at angles. Don't forget to paint screw heads!
