Whether you want to build one home or many, at some point you will need to know how to pass the general contractor test. I recently subdivided some land and will be building a spec home on one of the lots. Since I'm not going to live in the home, the only way I can build it is to hire it done by someone else, or get my general contactor license so I can build it myself.
