In this video I demonstrate how to perform percussion effectively in order to get a strong sound. The two main issues many medical students have when learning percussion is (1) to get a good enough seal between the palm and the patient's chest and (2) to have an effective percussion stroke which comes from the wrist, rather than the fingers. You are trying to generate a hammerlike action, an impulse which is directed at an area of bone on your finger. The finger and palm should be firmly in contact with the patient's body.

It's very important to get a good sound because percussion is actually a very useful clinical examination skill to have and will serve you well in many scenarios (percussing the chest for abnormalities such as effusions, finding the upper border of the liver, determining the size and position of ascites in the abdomen etc.).
