Playing by ear can be daunting, but today we break it down into just a few simple steps. Playing by ear DOESN'T mean having to get it right the first time, like Mozart or like Elton John. It just means using our ears, over repeated listens, to try and match pitches on our piano with the pitches we hear in the original recording. We start by working on the bass line. That bass line provides a framework for us to build our chords on top of. And then we find out that most all melody notes fit into both the chords we have built as well as the scale of the key. The 3 minutes of theory we talk about can more than double the pace you learn by ear, so don't skip that bit!
