How to play the Bach Partita for solo flute BWV1013 | Team Recorder

Sarah Jeffery / Team Recorder

The Bach Partita for solo flute/recorder one of the staples of our repertoire, and an amazing piece. But how do you approach it?? In this video I help you to tackle this piece how to effectively practice all those notes, understand how it's put together, and make musical phrasing.

The Partita BWV 1013 was originally in A minor, for the traverse flute. It is often played a minor third higher in C minor, on alto recorder. Of the four movements, this video concentrates on the first, the 'allemande'.

Scores and recordings can be found here:

I had filmed myself performing the piece too to include in the video, but in the end I was too much of a perfectionist and didn't lie any of the takes..! So that will come a different time. I want to note therefore that I play it a little slow than I do in the musical examples ;)

/// INSTRUMENTS
In this video I play on a resin 442 alto by Vincent Bernolin.
