How to pour a terrazzo flooring | SWR Craftmanship

"100year warranty!", laughs terrazzo builderNormann Hess, rather understating the matter: after all, his young client wanted a traditional terrazzo floor because the one in her father's house was still "beautiful" and that one was built in 1900.

"Terrazzo" just means "flooring" in Italian. But one that packs a punch: a finely tuned mixture of cement and stone chips, individually colored and poured onto the floor on site. Plus handmade mosaic borders. Then no cold air for several days, and finally a lot of sanding with different materials, filling and sanding again. Then wait for the impregnation once more.

The Hess family business from St. Wendel in the Saarland is one of the few that still masters this ageold craft. And between commissions at the Düsseldorf Palace of Art and a large brewery in Munich, it is also pouring a terrazzo floor in a singlefamily home in Thuringia to make sure it lasts at least 100 years.
