How to Propagate a Snake Plant - Dividing Pups

Follow
Houseplant Therapy

You can propagate a snake plant by dividing up the pups. Start by removing the pot from your snake plant and breaking up the soil around the roots. Gently massage the soil away from the stalk that attaches the mother plant to the baby plant. Once you have removed enough soil to see that rise home that connects to the baby, you can then cut it directly in the middle between the mother plant and pup.

Once you have cut away and remove the babies from the mother snake plant, you can then put them in smaller individual pots with their own soil. Remember that snake plants are succulents and they demand a fast draining soil. It is advised to mix up your own soil that’s fast draining or you can buy a premixed, cactus and succulent mix. When putting the pups into their individual pots, make sure to have enough soil to cover all of the roots and that rise song that you cut away from the mother plant.

This method of propagating, a snake plant has the highest potential and success rate. This is because the entire route system of the new plant is already established. For the first couple of months trying to water your new snake plant propagation’s when necessary. The new baby plants demand more water than an older plan would.

There are three ways to propagate a snake plant, and this is the most effective way. You can do a leaf cutting in water or you can put a leaf cutting in soil or you can cut away the babies from the mother plan like this method. The method of propagating the snake plant babies from the mother plant has the highest success rate because the root structure is fully grown and all you’re doing is transferring it to a different pot.
