Quick brief (pun intended :)) guide

If you just started law school (a 1L) and were given your first law school assignment, you probably were required to read a Supreme Court case and brief it. Reading a court case and completing a case brief is one of the 1st things law professors require of new students. In order to brief a case, you must understand the case. LaRita walks you through how to read a court case and use IRAC to draft a case brief. Learn how to read and write like a law student.

Issue Rule Analysis (or Application) Conclusion (IRAC) or CRAC will follow you all throughout law school. LaRita talks about how you can become an expert at brief writing and reading the voluminous amounts of court cases! The Bluebook will become your best friend and worst enemy!

Once you train your eye, you will be able to become an expert legal research reader and writer. Some undergraduate political science and criminal justice (prelaw) classes prepare you for law school and require you to brief court cases. Be prepared for any potential legal assignment.
