The POPLITEUS is a small muscle on the backside of your knee above the calf, this muscle helps to externally rotate your tibia as you start to bend your knee.

If you overstride or overextend your knee while running your popliteus might be becoming strained.

Saying this, there are many causes of knee pain, and knee pain can present itself in many different areas. This is one possible cause.
