How to repair small hole in plasterboard

How to repair a small hole in plasterboard / drywall? Unfortunately, it's not a good idea to fill it with the filler straight away. Plasterboard has paper on its surface so when the hole is formed the paper edges are frayed. Usually, after painting over the new filler, jagged edges remain visible. Also torn or damaged paper will expand in contact with paint. The better way to do a quick repair is to cut the paper with a sharp knife first.

To fill in the hole I used Wilko 'Let's patch it up' patching plaster suitable for repairs to interior walls and ceilings. Any silimar product for general plastering work will work well, too. The best sanding paper is eithe 60 or 80.

This method is only suitable for small damages. When you have to fix a larger hole you will need to cover it with a supportive material first. In this case, a piece of plasterboard cut to the size will do a job nicely.
