How To Scrape Rocks in Watercolor for Beginners - Basic Watercolor Technique

Follow
Deb Watson

Even beginners can scrape realistic rocks in watercolor, once you learn the basic tools and techniques. Scrape with: an old credit card cut in half, a palette knife, a razor blade (be careful!) or buy a scraper from an art store.

Paint a generous wash of color on the rock area, push the scraper down firmly and continue pushing down as you pull across to push the color out of one area and into another.

Give your scraped rocks a few minutes to set. If they seem too flat, you can add shading with more paint and a brush.

Good colors for rocks and trees are Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue and Burnt Sienna. You'll get better results if you paint the colors on separately and let them mix on the paper.

This video used Arches 140 lb. cold pressed paper, Silver black velvet 3/4" oval wash brush, a size 10 and 6 round wash brush.

About Deb

Deb Watson is a well known artist and teacher in watercolor realism. She loved art from an early age, but her parents thought it a waste of time. Even while working as a nurse and raising a family, Deb still found time to teach herself to paint. As her skills improved, she began teaching. Giving other people the encouragement she never found is very rewarding for Deb.

Deb's second passion is gardening with native plants to help the birds, bees and butterflies. She lives in Lancaster, PA with her husband and dog, Edgar.
