How to secure an IV (intravenous catheter) with a dressing kit (nursing skill). After you have successfully inserted an IV, aspirated for blood return, flushed, and clamped per your facility's protocols, you'll want to secure the IV to the patient.

Securing the IV is important because you don't want the IV to fall out or to be compromised. Most IV start kits include an adhesive dressing that you can apply to the patient's skin to secure the IV in place.

In this video, Nurse Sarah demonstrates how to secure a peripheral IV in the dorsum of the hand by using the common dressing provided in many IV start kits.

It is also important to secure it with an extra piece of tape that is included in the kit, and also date the IV per your facility's protocols so that other nurses can change the IV at the specified time interval.
