How To Sit With Piriformis Syndrome (Retrain Your Brain)

Follow
Dr. Charlie Johnson, PT

Sitting and driving is a common problem for folks with back, butt (Piriformis Syndrome), or sciatica pain. It can cause you to carry a cushion around, avoid going out with friends, limit your travel only to places nearby... all out of fear of a flare up or increased pain. But is there potentially a better way to handle it than just avoiding or running from it? Let me show you...

Here's what happens... as soon as most people experience pain... they run from it. They reach for their cushion, they stand at their desk, they shift weight off their buttock... all to avoid their pain.

And this makes sense if your pain is really bad. But if it's tolerable... all this really does is reinforce that sitting = danger. And each time you do this it programs your brain to have a negative association with sitting.

So, what do you do instead?

Sit with your pain in the butt and scan your body.

Don't try to change it... just observe it. Like you would observe a sunset, or waves at the beach, or the grass blowing in the wind... gently and with curiosity.

Then, open yourself up to the possibility that what you're experiencing is not damaging your body... that the pain you're feeling may NOT = damage... but rather a program your brain has been patterned to run.

Sitting = pain (bad), sitting = pain, sitting = pain

Could it be that the pain you're experiencing is a faulty signal? A brain mistake from many reps of avoiding sitting/driving?

Is it possible that all the nerves, joints, ligaments, muscles, and other structures in your body are okay... not damaged?

Something to consider... and try on.

After you've spent some time observing your pain... just watching it grow/shrink or move about... be done.

ONE rep complete.

With repetition, this practice of "scanning your body" can retrain your brain to NOT fear sitting or driving... and can help you view the pain you experience through a lens of safety vs. threat/danger.

Give it a try and let me know your thoughts below!
