Scoliosis is the development of an unnatural sideways curvature with a rotation component. The curve has to be a minimum Cobb angle measurement of 10 degrees or greater, usually measured on an Xray.

The size of the Cobb angle helps classify the severity of the scoliosis.

Mild: Cobb angle measurement of 1025 degrees
Moderate: Cobb angle measurement of 2640 degrees
Severe: Cobb angle measurement of 4080 degrees
Very severe: Cobb angle measurement 80 degrees or greater

The most prevalent type of scoliosis is adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Eighty percent of all cases are classified as idiopathic scoliosis, which means there is no known cause. The remaining 20 percent are associated with. Known causes are divided between neuromuscular scoliosis, congenital scoliosis, and traumatic scoliosis.

The best sleeping positions for patients with levoscoliosis is the same as for people with and without scoliosis. Flat on the back is the best way to keep the spine in alignment. The next best is to sleep on the side with something between the knees to help facilitate normal hip alignment.

The worst position to sleep is on your stomach, which naturally arches the low back, and you have to turn your head in an unhealthy position.

The very best way for patients to sleep is in their scoliosis brace. It helps push on their spine while they’re sleeping, so they’re sleeping in a corrective manner.

Sleep positions can help keep your spine in a better, more neutral alignment, but it’s not going to reduce the scoliosis that’s developing. Sleep, by far, is very important to create an environment of healing, and patients who sleep well respond better to treatment.

If you’re having trouble sleeping and you think it is related to your scoliosis, we recommend you treat your scoliosis to see if your sleep patterns will improve.
