Do you want to know how to stand out at work?

Have you ever felt that you’re not advancing quickly enough in your career?

Maybe you want to get noticed and promoted, but you’re not sure how to stand out at work.

In this video, I'm going to teach out how to STAND OUT at work.

One way to stand out at work — especially within a large company — is to take SMART RISKS.

Taking smart risks helps you get noticed and rewarded.

Risk #1: Open up your mobility
Are you willing to move in order to pursue new opportunities within your organization?

This can be a highly sensitive proposition for women — particularly if you are hesitant to “uproot” your family, or if your partner doesn’t want to move.

However, many women who have made it to the corner office say “opening up their mobility” played a critical role in their success within a large company.

If you express a willingness to move in order to pursue new and different opportunities, you'll build a much broader network and gain valuable experience about how your organization functions as a whole.

(Hint: one major career derailer for women is the failure to develop "crossfucntionality" within the organization. While developing a deep speciality in a particular area is rewarding, CEOs need to have an indepth understanding of how the company functions as a whole moving locations can help you develop this allimportant skill, and ultimately advance your career that much faster.

Risk #2 Choose the path that hasn’t yet been travelled.

The second smart risk you can take is to look within your organization for new, emerging or unproven departments, business lines or opportunities.

The more you’re able to get into the land of what’s unproven, new and untested, the more opportunity you’re going to have to prove yourself.

You can discover the “new territory” by:
asking senior leaders within the organization what new initiatives they’re working on;

scanning your company’s annual report for new mergers, acquisitions or areas of opportunity (hint: large, wellestablished companies usually grow via acquisition)
choosing one or two publications, blogs or experts specific to your industry and following them closely, paying careful attention to emerging trends.

Risk #3 Volunteer for tough assignments

The third smart risk you can take to help you stand out is to volunteer for tough assignments that other people don’t want.

I have worked with some incredibly successful women who truly proved themselves and set themselves apart by taking on tough or unwanted assignments which helped them to prove their mettle and make their mark.

The bottom line: risk gets noticed in large companies. Be on the lookout for new opportunities to move beyond your comfort zone. When it comes to getting the top job, why not you?
