How to start drawing the figure Renowned artist David Stead takes you through easy steps to create superb, flowing figure drawings in the manner of classical artists from his studio atelier at Norton Conyers House in North Yorkshire.

Drawing the figure life drawing, can be daunting but here's some easy steps to get you started.

We look at measuring the subject we look into starting drawings with gestural lines, starting with a skeleton style stickman, starting with a geometric shape and other approaches.

We are hoping that you’ll feel ready to tackle more poses in your next life drawing class or practice session, trying new things and starting to develop your own instincts.

David is an artist and writer, born Yorkshire, 1960. After studying fine art in London, he became a fulltime artist living in London, Gloucestershire and more latterly Devon. He has works in collections throughout the world.

David moved back to Yorkshire in 2001 to establish David Stead Galleries.

After working in the same studio for 15 years he recently moved to a larger space at the beautiful Norton Conyers House about four miles outside Ripon. This allows him to work on a more ambitious scale and also gives him a teaching space for regular classes and Summer schools.
