History of the building I referenced:
The Plaza House is one of the few oldest commercial buildings left in Los Angeles from the 1880s owned by Philippe Garnier, a successful businessman, who hired the architecture firm, Kysor & Morgan to design it. It was meant for both living and business purposes, featuring a hotel on the second floor. It was built in an Italianate style which was popular back then.

Fast forward to 1916, Ezequiel Moreno a trained baker just arrived in California from Mexido. He started out by selling Mexican bread and pastries from horsedrawn carts in neighborhoods like Maravilla, Belvedere, and Boyle Heights. In the 1920’s moved his business to the first floor of the plaza house and opened La Esperanza Bakery.

Unfortunately La Esperanza bakery and restaurant closed its doors in the 1960’s, leading to its deterioration. It apparently stayed vacant from the mid 70s until the early 2000’s. At this time, the County fixed up the Plaza House and its neighboring buildings and it is now LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes, which is a cultural center celebrating Mexican and MexicanAmerican heritage.
