How to Setup Your Own Phytoplankton Culture At Home Using Sunlight / No External Light
In this week's episode, we will show you how to set up your own phytoplankton culture at home. This is a very lowcost and lowmaintenance setup because we will only be utilizing sunlight to grow our phytoplankton culture.
I have been using this setup for the past 3 months and it has worked really well so far. I love that it looks minimalistic and it is very easy to maintain. You only need to clean the glass container every two weeks.
Here is a list of equipment that you will need to get started:
• 250ml Phytoplankton Starter Culture
• F2 Fertilizer (I got mine from www.fragmate.com)
• Air Pump (The more outlets, the better as you don't need to split the line/tube)
• Airline Tubing (Get more than you need!)
• Container (I use a glass container because it is so much easier to clean)
Culture Preparation Guide:
• Make culture media Mix two parts of saltwater (1.026 S.G.) with one part of RODI water. This will give you roughly 1.018 S.G.
• Add the culture media and the phytoplankton starter culture in the container.
• Add 1ml (20 drops) of F2 Fertilizer for every 1L of the culture media.
• Insert the airline tubing and make sure it goes all the way down to the bottom and set the air pump to the highest setting. If the phytoplankton settles at the bottom, it will die and your culture will crash.
• Place your culture in a welllit area (with lots of sunlight) and see it grow.
• You will be able to harvest it every 7 10 days. You now have a successful phytoplankton culture at home!
I hope that this video helps you to start your own phytoplankton culture. If you have any other questions, please let me know! Don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss out on the exciting things to come!
