How to strengthen your anterior scalene for side flexion | The MSK Physio

Can you touch your chin to your collarbone with a relaxed jaw and shoulders? If not, this may be due to restrictions on the same or opposite side of your neck!

A nice way to visualise what this muscle does is to think of a sailboat mast and the ropes either side of it to help control the mast. When your brain perceives a lack of control it may tighten up the surrounding muscles to create a shortterm useful brace. If that brace continues past the timeframe it is actually needed for, then there will be increased tightness of the muscle at rest. Over time this can lead to weakness at end ranges. In this case chin to collarbone, or the opposite. The solution is to strengthen the muscle back up!

This exercise can be useful for breathing dysfunction, thoracic outlet syndrome and sprained necks!
