How to Test Solar Panels - For Beginners!

Nates DIY Solar

A comprehensive guide on how to test solar panels using a solar panel multimeter and a standard multimeter. I use the Klein CL800 and the Elejoy (FrogBro) EY800W to perform the tests. Also, we will see the difference in power between a slightly used and brand new panel of the same make and model.

It should be noted that while a multimeter will give you an indication as to whether you have a working panel or not; it is not necessarily the most accurate device to use when testing solar panels as they should be tested under load.

I also cover how to use a multimeter as well as how to read solar panel specifications. The solar panel meter I used in this video has a 60V limit, so it is not very useful when trying to test more than one high voltage output panel (above 30V) in series. It’s intended for lower voltage panels. Otherwise, you would have to connect your panels in parallel, thus requiring a branch connector to do so. It's best to just test panels one at a time if you are trying to figure out if you have a bad panel somewhere.
