Viral warts which are present on the plantar surface of the foot are called Plantar Warts. These are usually very painful when weight is put on them during walking. They often occur in clusters and on multiple sites on the plantar surface.
Plantar warts and viral warts in general are contagious. They should not be touched with bare hands as some people unknowingly play with them. They should be treated on the earliest possible to avoid spreading to other body areas or other people.
They can be effectively treated by Electrofulguration. In this procedure, electric cautery is used to kill the cells. Dead tissue is then carefully removed with a surgical blade.
Cryotherapy can also be used to kill virus infected cells. In this procedure, nitrogen gas is directed towards the wart from about 1 cm distance for a few seconds. Dead tissue is then carefully removed with a surgical blade.
A combination of Electrofulguration and Cryotherapy is also used to increase effectiveness of the treatment. Usually more than one sessions of therapy 3 to 4 weeks apart are required. Therapy is usually completely painless.
Recurrence is common. Because a single virus infected cell left in the base of a treated Viral Wart can multiply to produce Viral Wart again.
