There are many ecofriendly pest control options available to homeowners today, from citronella candles to water traps.
But none are as natural and cheap as cucumbers.
That’s right, – a raw, bitter cucumber is a green pest control option unbeknown to many homeowners.
While this ecofriendly pest control technique won’t rid your home of a major infestation, it can solve minor pest problems and can be used in conjunction with other green pest control methods.
Here are a few of the common household pests that can be removed with the help of the humble cucumber.
1. Ants.
Ants do not like the scent of cucumber peels.
According to research sources, ants hate the bitter taste of cucumber, its funguskilling properties, and the unattractive smell of cucumber.
To use cucumbers place slices of cucumber peels in strategic hot spots in your home, where you typically see those ants crawling around, especially places with food sources for them.
Another good place is entry points such as gaps, crevices and holes that make it possible for ants to enter.
2. Snails.
There may have been a time when you bought or received live plants for your aquarium, and then immediately placed them into the tank once you arrived home.
Several days or weeks later while you’re observing the tank, you spot a random snail or two.
A few weeks or months pass by, and suddenly there are snails in every spot of the aquarium you look at!
This overpopulation is a common occurrence for those who first encounter pest snails in the hobby, and leaves many hobbyists mulling over how to remove them.
Some species like Malaysian trumpet snails are nocturnal and like to burrow in the substrate, so it can be harder to collect them from the tank.
In those cases, attract the snails by using some delicious vegetables as bait.
Drop a piece of cucumber into the aquarium overnight, and by the next morning, the vegetable should be covered in snails for you to remove.
If you have a friend with snaileating fish you can give them the snails, or rehome them elsewhere.
3. Bee’s.
Cucumbers are perfect for the summer as they keep you refreshed and go well with salads.
Cucumber peels are an ideal natural repellent for eliminating bee problems.
You might think it's too simple to be effective, but it works like a charm.
This vegetable is good at keeping bees away because bees aren’t fond of the acidity the cucumber peel has.
Placing the peels around your area will help bees and other insects stay away from your food.
Another method that is said to work well is to cut up a fresh cucumber into slices and line the peels in a single layer on an aluminium pie plate.
Cucumber and aluminium react and produce a chemical odour that bees cannot stand.
4. Cockroaches.
