How to varnish a painting

Eva Volf

Just a quick tutorial on how to varnish an oil painting. I prefer using Gamvar gloss varnish by Gamblin (no affiliation here, just a personal preference), you can also mix gloss and satin varnish 1:1 if you want to have less gloss. Varnishing helps protect your artwork from damage, dust and UV rays. It also brings out the true beauty and richness of oil colors.
Follow these rules to get your varnishing right:
1) Your oil painting should be completely dry (at least a couple of months, better half a year).
2) You should dust the painting with a clean wipe or brush before varnishing.
3) The room should be very clean (as dust free as possible)
4) Your surface should be flat for even coverage.
Happy varnishing! I hope you’ll find this video useful.
