How to Varnish a Painting (Oil or Acrylic) - By Artist Andrea Kirk | The Art Chik

Varnishing a finished painting is actually easier than you think. If you have just completed an acrylic or oil painting, and are wondering what to do next...I’ve got your back! I found two varnishes that I love, and use regularly as a professional artist. The first being, “Krylon” Gallery Series UV Archival gloss spray, and second, “Liquitex” Professional Soluvar Gloss Varnish. Because oil paintings take a lot longer to dry than acrylic paintings, it’s nice to know that you can use a temporary spray varnish until the oil painting has dried completely (between 6 to 12 months). That way, your painting will still look fresh and also have protection until that point, when you can apply permanent damar varnish or Liquitex Professional gloss varnish (my absolute favorite, and the one demonstrated in my video!!!). For acrylic paintings, just give the painting a few days to dry completely, and you’re good to go. You can either apply the Krylon spray, or Liquitex Gloss Varnish. It isn’t necessary to do both for acrylics. The final results are stunning! And the quality, superb. I’ve included links below for both products so that you can get started . Enjoy!
