In this video we talk about hypermagnesemia. We talk about how to define hypermagnesemia, as well as the role magnesium plays in the body. We see how magnesium acts like a calcium and potassium channel blocker; and therefore causes a myriad of symptoms. We see how renal failure, increased laxative or antacid intake, as well as excessive IV magnesium administration can lead to hypermagnesemia.
Some symptoms of high magnesium levels include respiratory depression, hypotension, bradycardia, diminished deep tendon reflexes and muscle weakness.
