In the DLC trailer we see Marika involved in some profane ritual. In this video I argue that ritual was sacrificing the people of the Nameless Eternal City to create a crucible environment (Much like Rykards area as per his sword description) for the Elden Beast to land in and grow eventually into the Erdtree (See location and description of Elden Stars, and Siluria's Tree).
