I travel to the mangroves on the beaches of San Lorenzo, Honduras, to hunt curiles (Honduran oysters). Curiles are shellfish that have a rich flavor when eating the meat inside as ceviches and are considered a delicacy of southern Honduras. The curiles live in the mud and among the roots of the mangroves. We ride boats to take advantage of the few hours of the day when the sea level drops enough for us to get into the mud.

When we reach a mud beach, we wade in up to our knees and get stuck. The work is extremely hard, as there are many mosquitoes, crabs, small animals and sharp objects. I cut my finger and want to cry because of the pain but the professional curil hunters who accompany us tell me that we have to endure and that the wounds are normal. It takes me half an hour to find my first curil. People who hunt curiles earn 2 lempiras (10 US cents) for each curil they sell in the market. I learn about the sacrifice and effort of the people who enter the mud every day so that we tourists can try the curiles in the restaurants. My respects and admiration goes to each of them.

After organizing a competition to see which group can hunt the most curiles, we visit the famous Playa del Amor where they say that when 2 people enter, 3 people leave. We take the boat to get to the Floating House where we watch the sunset, light a grill and begin to grill large fish, shrimp, crabs, and curiles on charcoal. The scenery, food, and new friends make for an incredible atmosphere. After trying shrimp baleadas, fish eye baleadas, and fish head baleadas, Rony brings out a birthday cake for someone very special in my life.
