"If—" is a poem by English poet Rudyard Kipling, written circa 1895. It is a literary example of Victorianera stoicism. The poem, first published in Rewards and Fairies following the story "Brother SquareToes", is written in the form of paternal advice to the poet's son, John.

The overarching theme of the poem If is successful virtuous living based on values pertaining to integrity, rightful behavior and selfdevelopment. The poem speaks to each and every reader on what it means to become a complete man and how he operates through the thick and thins of life.

About the Poet:
Joseph Rudyard Kipling was an English novelist, shortstory writer, poet, and journalist. He was born in British India, which inspired much of his work. Kipling's works of fiction include the Jungle Book duology, Kim, the Just So Stories and many short stories, including "The Man Who Would Be King".
