If You sold your car, What Should You Do With The License Plates?

In Massachusetts, drivers are required to register their vehicles and purchase compulsory auto insurance coverage.

To ensure that drivers comply with state insurance laws, drivers must turn in their license plates before canceling their auto insurance policy.

If you are transferring your Vehicle's ownership, you must properly register and insure the car before driving on state roads.

Hi I am Carlos Vargas a partner at Vargas & Vargas Insurance, your local independent insurance agent.

Before You Turn In The Plates, Are You Planning To Buy A New Vehicle?
If you are planning to purchase a new car, you have seven days after the sale of your old vehicle to register a similar one and keep the same license plates. If not, then make sure to cancel the plates right away. This is because your insurance follows the registration and not the automobile itself. If you don't cancel them, you will still be held responsible for any excise tax associated with that car and won't be able to terminate insurance coverage either.

You may be asking yourself, How Do I Cancel My License Plates
To cancel your MA plates, you will need your email address, the type and number of the plate, the last four digits of your Social Security Number, and a Driver's License.
The Massachusetts RMV offers various services such as Registration and Title Applications, plate transfers, registration renewals all online.

If you have been in an accident, your car might be totaled and not worth selling. Sometimes, old cars simply have little value or have major mechanical problems. In such a case, you might choose to donate your car to a non profit or have it towed to a junkyard where it will be crushed.
It is a good idea to remove the license plate, and don't forget to take your personal possessions out of the car as well
If you have a leased vehicle, Before returning your leased car to the dealership, make sure you have all the items that were included with it, such as a second set of keys, cargo covers, spare tires, original floor mats and thirdrow seats. Also, don't forget to remove your belongings from the car and detach the license plate. In the past, I have had the leased vehicle that I am returning detailed so as not to be charged for any minor scratches that the detailing folks will remove.
