The Ilyushin Il2 (Ил2) Sturmovik is a groundattack aircraft produced by the Soviet Union in large numbers during the Second World War.
During the war, 36,183 units of the Il2 were produced. To Il2 pilots, the aircraft was simply the diminutive "Ilyusha". Il2 pilots also often attacked close formations of Junkers Ju 87s, as the 7.92 mm (0.312 in) machine guns of the Ju 87 Stukas were ineffective against the heavily armoured Shturmoviks. In the winter of 1941–1942, Il2s were used against Luftwaffe transport aircraft, and became the most dangerous opponent of the Junkers Ju 52/3m. Other successful units were those in 1942–1943 operating near Stalingrad. Their targets were not only Ju 52s but also Heinkel He 111 and FockeWulf Fw 200 Condor bombers, delivering supplies to the besieged German troops.
