The two muscles which comprise the iliopsoas are:
Psoas major muscle this muscle has its origin on the bodies of the vertebrae T12L4 and the costal processes of the vertebrae L1L5. It then inserts at the lesser trochanter of the femur
Iliacus muscle originates from the iliac fossa, and inserts at the lesser trochanter, just like the poses major muscle.
The main function of the iliopsoas muscle is flexion of the hip joint , therefore making it an important muscle for walking/gait. In the supine/lying position it decisively assists in the elevation of the torso, e.g. during situps. The iliopsoas muscle also assists in lateral, or external rotation of the thigh at the hip joint.
Unilateral contraction results in lateral flexion of the lumbar vertebral column.
