The wellknown poet, lyricist and scriptwriter, who in the 1970s created Amitabh Bachchan’s angry young man character, Javed Akhtar, has categorically stated that he believes a Uniform Civil Code is desirable and necessary but added that for him, personally, the most important thing is to ensure complete and comprehensive gender equality, without any discrimination whatsoever for either the girl child or the adult woman. Mr. Akhtar also said India cannot delay giving itself a Uniform Civil Code on the grounds the time is not right. He said it will never be right because there will always be people opposed to it. Whilst every effort must be made to carry everyone along and to convince them, we cannot give a veto to extremists of any community.
