Choroideremia Research Foundation - Cure CHM

Presentation provided by: Dong Feng Chen, MD, PhD, Schepens Eye Research Institute of Mass Eye and Ear, Department of Ophthalmology, Harvard Medical School

Emerging research has shown that transpalpebral (eyelid) electrical stimulation (ES) of the eye may be a powerful method for preserving vision in otherwise irreversible blinding diseases such as choroideremia (CHM) among others. This approach, commonly used to restore muscle and neural functions, may offer a unique way to interact with the neuroretina for disease management and preservation of vision. Our recent studies have highlighted the significant benefits of transpalpebral ES at specific parameters for preserving vision in several mouse models of retinal degeneration. These effects are believed to help with improved photoreceptor survival and function, and the inhibition of neuroinflammation. The safety and noninvasive nature of this treatment supports its potential for future largescale trials in treating retinal degenerative diseases including CHM.
