In the year 2154, Earth has become a bleak and overpopulated slum, while the wealthy reside on Elysium, an advanced space station orbiting the planet. The story centers around Max Da Costa, a former car thief living in Los Angeles, now reduced to a povertystricken Earth. After an accident at the factory where he works, Max is exposed to a lethal dose of radiation and given only days to live. Desperate for a cure that is only available on Elysium, Max agrees to a dangerous mission.

Max's objective is to steal data that could topple Elysium's government and equalize the societal imbalance. He is outfitted with a powerful exoskeleton that enhances his strength and connects him directly to computer systems, a critical tool for his mission. Along the way, Max reconnects with Frey, a childhood friend, who now works as a nurse and has a daughter suffering from leukemia. Frey's situation adds a personal dimension to Max's fight, as the advanced medical technology on Elysium could also save her daughter.

As Max embarks on his mission, he encounters Secretary Delacourt, an Elysium official who will stop at nothing to preserve the status quo.
