The Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed a bill that seeks to merge the Union Territories of Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

The merger is aimed at fasttracking the development of the two union territories.

Responding to the brief debate on the Bill.... Minister of State for Home G Kishen Reddy said the measure will help in strengthening administrative efficiency services.

On the same subject Home Minister Amit Shah assured that reservation provided to people in the two union territories will continue.

Further number of Lok Sabha seats will also remain unaltered and the jurisdiction of the Bombay High Court will also continue over the two territories.

The merger of the Union territories comes on the heels of the bifurcation of the State of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories that took effect from last month...

Our focus today is on the issue of reorganisaton of states and Union territories... We look at the need and the various reasons for this ... while revisiting the decision on Jammu and Kashmir ... and also the disputes and the demands that have been continuing for decades and are still in the process of being resolved..
