Kangpokpi District of Manipur was completely disconnected from the rest of the world on May 28 after Cyclone Remal wreaked havoc in the district. Services such as power supply, water and road communication among several others have been disrupted since Tuesday.

Cyclone Remal swept through the town causing flash floods due to the incessant rainfall mainly in the lowlying areas. One of the blocks of the District Hospital, which houses a laboratory room, examination room, rest room, kitchen, and emergency room, was inundated forcing authorities to cease services for the day.

Residential areas such as Zonlhing Veng, Ngambom Veng, Lamdil Veng, Zaphal Veng, Phungtin Veng, Tintong Veng, Moltinchan Veng and Zonlhing Veng are among the worst hit. In Zonlhing Veng two excavators had to be engaged to divert the water that inundated houses.

The incessant rainfall also swelled the Gundung River and various other rivulets resulting in the collapse of the bridge over Gundung. The bridge connecting Kangpokpi with Saikul SubDivisional Headquarters via Keithelmanbi served as one of the important routes for the people residing in Saikul.

Landslides were also reported from various locations along National Highway 2, which were immediately cleared by the district police, preventing traffic jams.

Although the situation improved by late on Tuesday evening, electricity and other services are yet to be restored.
