Oaxaca, the food capital of Mexico, is known for its incredible Mexican street food scene using indigenous ingredients. As we were planning our route through Mexico, we knew Oaxaca city had to be our first stop! We love to dive deep into each destination’s authentic culture; and one of the best ways to explore a new place is through its food and people both of which are easily accessible at local street food markets.

In today’s video we take you around the city of Oaxaca to taste the delicious Mexican street food (Comida Oaxaqueña) this region is famous for!

We start the street food tour at Mercado de Abastos with memelas for breakfast. This Oaxaca speciality is a musttry and the perfect start to our day hitting the streets! Memelas are made with a cornbased tortilla topped with beans, quesillo (Oaxacan cheese) and whatever other toppings sound good.

Next, we head over to Mercado 20 de Noviembre for Cafe de Olla (Oaxacan Coffee), Chocolate de Leche (Oaxacan Hot Chocolate), Pan de Yem (egg bread), and Mole Negro. Mole negro is one of the most famous dishes in Oaxaca and in Mexico. Oaxaca is known for its seven moles, but the negro is our favorite! This complex and delicious sauce usually goes on chicken, but today we had ours with beans, rice and fresh corn tortillas!

Cooling off with a Horchata from a street cart outside the Benito Juarez Market, you can’t miss the amazing aguas and nieves on the streets of Oaxaca. We tried a Mezcal Nieve and a Tuna Nieve (prickly pear cactus) amazing!

Afterwards, we head through the long maze of street vendors and spot a local, preHispanic drink known as Tejate. This drink was different than all the others. It was more savory and has strong notes from its maize and cacao ingredients. Definitely a musttry in the state of Oaxaca!

You can’t do Mexican street food without Elotes y Esquites! Just typing that makes our mouths drool… This famous cheezy corn street food star is one of our alltime favorites. Spicy, salty and so yummy you MUST add this to your street food list in Oaxaca.

As if our stomachs weren’t full already, we hit one last gut check in preparation of the finish line and chow down on a massive, crunchy Tlayuda. Known as the Mexican Pizza, Tlayudas are huge, crispy corn tortillas topped with the tangy Quesillo, beans, cabbage and hot sauce, then grilled over an open flame grill. You’ll see Tlayuda joints scattered all throughout Oaxaca!

To cap off the night, we head to the local Mezcal bar to taste the ‘other Tequila’ that Oaxaca is known for. With Mezcals in hand, we cheers to the best street food in Mexico salud!
