Tarikh Episode 539

In This Episode Nikhil talks about Bodhisena, a 8thcentury South Indian Buddhist monk, holds a unique place in the history of Buddhism for his significant contributions to Japan. Born in 704 AD in Madurai, India, he embarked on a spiritual journey that ultimately led him to Japan. Initially, he traveled to China in search of the incarnation of Manjusri Bodhisattva, but upon reaching Mount Wutai, he learned that this incarnation resided in Japan.
Emperor Shōmu's invitation brought Bodhisena to Japan in 736 AD, where he played a pivotal role in establishing the Kegon school of Buddhism, a Japanese transmission of the Huayan school of Chinese Buddhism. His journey to Japan involved traveling with a Japanese delegation through Southeast Asia.
Upon arrival in Japan, Bodhisena was warmly received by the monk Gyoki, with whom he shared a profound connection from their supposed past lives. Emperor Shōmu honored him, and he even performed the eyeopening ceremony for the colossal bronze statue of Buddha Vairocana in Tōdaiji.
Bodhisena's legacy in Japan extended beyond religion. He influenced Japan's traditional court dance, music, and the development of the Japanese script, leaving an enduring mark on the nation's culture. His life's work embodies the enduring spirit of crosscultural exchange and the dissemination of Buddhist teachings, making Bodhisena a significant figure in the history of Buddhism in Japan.
