Chaat. They’re everywhere in India, from their hearts to their stomachs. Sweet, savory, spicy, sour, and sometimes salty, chaats are like a party in your mouth.

In this Chandigarh food tour, I enlisted the help of a local foodie, Namrata, to try Indian Chaat for the first time and embark on a special Indian Street Food tour of the best SNACKS and CHAATS that are beloved by Indians.

Firstly, I try Papri Chaat and Dahi Bhalle at Gopal Sweets, where I am able to get behind the kitchen counter and see how chaats are made. I get to experience and eat chaats made with many contrasting ingredients, and experience their contradicting and delicious flavors.

Next, Namrata decided to introduce me to a pani puri challenge. Instead of beginning with minty or mild gol gappe, she insists that I react to pani puri at the HIGHEST spice level possible. She tells me it’s like knocking back shots at a bar….

My computer is autocorrecting Panipuri to “pain puri”, and I can see why!

When I try pani puri for the first time, I feel like a fire has been ignited inside my mouth. Knocking back the spicy water shot after shot, tears are in my eyes I am almost crying from eating pani puri for the first time.
